Evaluation of Two Commercially Available Cannabidiol Formulations for Use in Electronic Cigarettes
Since 24 states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana in some form, suppliers of legal marijuana have developed Cannabis sativa products for use in electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes). Personal battery powered vaporizers, or e-cigarettes, were developed to deliver a nicotine vapor such that smokers could simulate smoking tobacco without the inherent pathology of inhaled tobacco smoke. The liquid formulations used in these devices are comprised of an active ingredient such as nicotine mixed with vegetable glycerin (VG) and/or propylene glycol (PG) and flavorings. A significant active ingredient of C. sativa, cannabidiol (CBD), has been purported to have anti-convulsant, anti-nociceptive, and anti-psychotic properties. These properties have potential medical therapies such as intervention of addictive behaviors, treatments for epilepsy, management of pain for cancer patients, and treatments for schizophrenia. However, CBD extracted from C. sativa remains a DEA Schedule I drug since it has not been approved by the FDA for medical purposes. Two commercially available e-cigarette liquid formulations reported to contain 3.3 mg/mL of CBD as the active ingredient were evaluated. These products are not regulated by the FDA in manufacturing or in labeling of the products and were found to contain 6.5 and 7.6 mg/mL of CBD in VG and PG with a variety of flavoring agents. Presently, while labeled as to content, the quality control of manufacturers and the relative safety of these products is uncertain
Destabilization of a Solar Prominence/Filament Field System by a Series of Eight Homologous Eruptive Flares
Homologous flares are flares that occur repetitively in the same active
region, with similar structure and morphology. A series of at least eight
homologous flares occurred in active region NOAA 11237 over 16 - 17 June 2011.
A nearby prominence/filament was rooted in the active region, and situated near
the bottom of a coronal cavity. The active region was on the southeast solar
limb as seen from SDO/AIA, and on the disk as viewed from STEREO/EUVI-B. The
dual perspective allows us to study in detail behavior of the
prominence/filament material entrained in the magnetic field of the
repeatedly-erupting system. Each of the eruptions was mainly confined, but
expelled hot material into the prominence/filament cavity system (PFCS). The
field carrying and containing the ejected hot material interacted with the PFCS
and caused it to inflate, resulting in a step-wise rise of the PFCS
approximately in step with the homologous eruptions. The eighth eruption
triggered the PFCS to move outward slowly, accompanied by a weak coronal
dimming. As this slow PFCS eruption was underway, a final ejective flare
occurred in the core of the active region, resulting in strong dimming in the
EUVI-B images and expulsion of a coronal mass ejection (CME). A plausible
scenario is that the repeated homologous flares could have gradually
destabilized the PFCS, and its subsequent eruption removed field above the
acitive region and in turn led to the ejective flare, strong dimming, and CME.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in Ap
Solar Polar Spicules Observed with Hinode
We examine solar polar region spicules using high-cadence Ca II data from the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) on the Hinode spacecraft. We sharpened the images by convolving them with the inverse-point-spread function of the SOT Ca II filter, and we are able to see some of the spicules originating on the disk just inside the limb. Bright points are frequently at the root of the disk spicules. These "Ca II brightenings" scuttle around at approx.few x 10 km/s, live for approx.100 sec, and may be what are variously known as "H_{2V} grains," "K_{2V} grains," or "K_{2V} bright points." When viewed extending over the limb, some of the spicules appear to expand horizontally or split into two or more components, with the horizontal expansion or splitting velocities reaching approx.50 km/s. Water-soluble SNS cationic palladium(II) complexes and their Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reactions in aqueous medium
Abstract: Unlike their SCS analogues, SNS pincer complexes are poorly studied for their use in coupling reactions. Accordingly, a series of water soluble cationic Pd(II) SNS pincer complexes have been successfully synthesised and investigated in detail for their catalytic activity in Suzuki–Miyaura coupling reactions. By using only 0.5 mol % loading of the complexes, the coupling of inactivated aryl bromides and activated aryl chlorides with various boronic acids in water was achieved in excellent yields and the catalysts were found to be reusable for three cycles without a significant loss of activity. The investigation of the mechanism of the reaction revealed that a Pd(II) to Pd(IV) route is the more likely pathway which was further supported by computational studies
Kinetics of coherent order-disorder transition in
Within a phase field approach which takes the strain-induced elasticity into
account, the kinetics of the coherent order-disorder transition is investigated
for the specific case of alloy. It is shown that a microstructure
with cubic precipitates appears as a transient state during the
decomposition of a homogeneous disordered solid solution into a microstructure
with tetragonal precipitates embedded into a disordered matrix. At
low enough temperature, favored by a weak internal stress, only
precipitates grow in the transient microstructure preceding nucleation of the
precipitates that occurs exclusively at the interface of the solid
solution with the precipitates. Analysis of microstructures at
nanoscopic scale shows a characteristic rod shape for the
precipitates due to the combination of their tetragonal symmetry and their

SDO and STEREO Observations of Prominence Dynamics During a Series of Eight Homologous Flares

The active region appears on the southeast solar limb as seen from SDO/AIA, and on the disk as viewed from STEREO-B/EUVI; the dual perspective allows us to study in detail behavior of prominence/filament material entrained in the magnetic field of the repeatedly-erupting system. Each of the eruptions was mainly confined, with active-region prominence material being ejected from the core of the erupting region onto outer-lobe loops of the active region. The eruption series repeatedly disrupted material of a quiet-Sun extension of the prominence, and that material became suspended at progressively higher heights above the surface. Two final eruptions from the core region destabilized the field holding that material, instigating a coronal mass ejection (CME)
Failure of a non-authorized copy product to maintain response achieved with imatinib in a patient with chronic phase chronic myeloid leukemia: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Due to high rates of response and durable remissions, imatinib (Glivec<sup>®</sup>, or Gleevec<sup>®</sup> in the USA; Novartis Pharma AG) is the standard of care in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia. Recently, a non-authorized product which claims comparability to imatinib has become available.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>This report describes the loss of response in a 36-year-old male patient with chronic-phase chronic myeloid leukemia who had previously been in full hematologic and cytogenetic remission and partial molecular remission for three years, under treatment with brand-name imatinib of 400 mg per day. Before the initiation of treatment with a copy product, imatib (CIPLA-India), the patient had negative BCR-ABL status. Within three months of initiation of treatment with the copy product, the patient's BCR-ABL status became positive, with substantial decreases noted in white blood cell counts, red blood cell counts and platelet counts. Conversion of the BCR-ABL status to negative and improvements in hematologic parameters were achieved when the brand medication, imatinib, was resumed at a dose of 600 mg per day.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In our patient, the substitution of a copy product for imatinib resulted in the rapid loss of a previously stable response, with the risk of progression to life-threatening accelerated phase or blast crisis phase of the disease. Without supportive clinical evidence of efficacy and safety of imatib (or any other copy product) caution should be used when substituting imatinib in the treatment of any patient with chronic myeloid leukemia.</p
The role of Neuropilin-1 in COVID-19
Neuropilin-1 (NRP-1), a member of a family of signaling proteins, was shown to serve as an entry factor and potentiate SARS Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infectivity in vitro. This cell surface receptor with its disseminated expression is important in angiogenesis, tumor progression, viral entry, axonal guidance, and immune function. NRP-1 is implicated in several aspects of a SARS-CoV-2 infection including possible spread through the olfactory bulb and into the central nervous system and increased NRP-1 RNA expression in lungs of severe Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). Up-regulation of NRP-1 protein in diabetic kidney cells hint at its importance in a population at risk of severe COVID-19. Involvement of NRP-1 in immune function is compelling, given the role of an exaggerated immune response in disease severity and deaths due to COVID-19. NRP-1 has been suggested to be an immune checkpoint of T cell memory. It is unknown whether involvement and up-regulation of NRP-1 in COVID-19 may translate into disease outcome and long-term consequences, including possible immune dysfunction. It is prudent to further research NRP-1 and its possibility of serving as a therapeutic target in SARS-CoV-2 infections. We anticipate that widespread expression, abundance in the respiratory and olfactory epithelium, and the functionalities of NRP-1 factor into the multiple systemic effects of COVID-19 and challenges we face in management of disease and potential long-term sequelae
Simultaneous Observations of the Chromosphere with TRACE and SUMER
Using mainly the 1600 angstrom continuum channel, and also the 1216 angstrom
Lyman-alpha channel (which includes some UV continuum and C IV emission),
aboard the TRACE satellite, we observed the complete lifetime of a transient,
bright chromospheric loop. Simultaneous observations with the SUMER instrument
aboard the SOHO spacecraft revealed interesting material velocities through the
Doppler effect existing above the chromospheric loop imaged with TRACE,
possibly corresponding to extended non-visible loops, or the base of an X-ray
